These days it feels like everyone is building an AI startup, so I figured I might as well join the crowd and see if I can make something interesting in this not-so-niche niche.
It didn’t take me long to realize that my biggest hobby has always been learning languages. The problem is that the App Store is already flooded with language learning apps, and competing with Duolingo isn’t exactly realistic.
So I started looking for a niche within that niche and realized something: I’ve always believed that practice is the most important part of learning any language. And that’s exactly where many people struggle. The famous green owl can only take you so far.
First, it’s hard to find someone who’s willing to practice with you consistently. Second, even if you do find someone, they’ll probably get bored sooner or later (unless you’re paying them).
People eventually came up with another solution: talking to ChatGPT. But the way ChatGPT works is pretty simple—you ask a question, it answers. If you don’t ask anything, nothing happens.
I wanted to build something in between. Something that combines both approaches. That’s how I came up with Polyglossa.
It’s a messenger where you chat with virtual friends. I basically imagined it as a clone of Telegram or Facebook, except you’re the only real person there.
It works the way you’d expect: you choose your interests, add friends, say hi, and start chatting. Every one of those “friends” has their own personality and interests.
The main feature I want to get right is the bots’ behavior. I want them to act like real people—or even better, like your actual friends. They should message you first, ask how you’re doing, tell you what they’re thinking about, what they’re doing, what they’re planning, and just have natural conversations with you.
For the tech stack, I chose Next.js for both the web app and backend, Supabase for the database and authentication, and Groq for the AI.
Current features:
- A Next.js web app that can be installed as a PWA.
- Support for 16 languages, including Qazaq 🇰🇿.
- 54 AI characters, each with their own personality and interests.

Недолго думая пришел к тому, что мое главное увлечение в жизни - это изучение языков. Но аппстор сплошь переполнен приложениями для изучения языков, да и куда там конкурировать с дуолинго.
Решил поискать нишу внутри этой ниши и осознал кое что: я всегда считал практику самой главной частью изучения какого бы то ни было языка. И именно с практикой у многих возникают проблемы, с которыми пресловутая зеленая сова тебе не поможет.
Во-первых, трудно найти того, кто тебе в этом поможет. Во-вторых, даже если такой человек найдется, ему это быстро наскучит (если конечно он не будет за это получать деньги).
Догадливые люди придумали иной выход - общаться с ChatGPT. Но как выглядит формат общения с ChatGPT? Ты задаешь вопрос - он отвечает. Не задаешь - не отвечает.
Я решил создать нечто среднее. Что-то, что объединяет эти два подхода. Таким образом я придумал Polyglossa. Мессенджер, в котором ты общаешься с виртуальными друзьями. Практически я его задумал как клон телеграма или фейсбука, только ты в нем единственный живой человек.
Работает по знакомым всем принципам - задаешь свои интересы, добавляешь себе друзей, саламкаешься, и общаешься. У каждого из этих "друзей" свои интересы и характер.
Самой главной фишкой моего решения я задумал сделать поведение ботов, чтобы они вели себя как люди, или еще лучше - как твои друзья. По моей задумке они должны писать тебе первыми, интересоваться тобой, рассказывать о том что думают и делают и хотят сделать, и т.д.
В качестве стека выбрал Next.js (веб-приложение и бэкенд) и Supabase для базы данных и аутентикации. Для AI использую Groq.
Что готово на данный момент:
- Веб-приложение на Next.js, которое можно установить как PWA.
- 16 языков, включая қазақ тілі 🇰🇿.
- 54 бота. Каждый со своими интересами и характером.
- Функция проверки уровня владения языком. На основе твоих диалогов приложение анализирует твой уровень, а также подсказывает в чем ты хромаешь и что с этим можно сделать.
Что планирую добавить в будущее:
- Android и iOS приложения.
- Дополнительные фичи на основе данных из диалогов.
- Делать SEO (страницы, блог)
Прогресс:
- 20 регистраций из соцсетей (Twitter, Threads, Reddit)
