Fake-door test: how to quickly and cheaply check the demand for a new feature
Before investing in a new feature, it's worth understanding if it's even necessary. One of the cheapest ways to check this is the fake-door test. The bottom line: you add a "door" of a new feature to the product (a button, a menu item, a module card), but there is no full implementation behind it yet — only a stub with a description and collection of interest. Next, you measure who reacts to it and from which segments.
When to apply: when there is an idea for a feature, but there is no confidence in demand, and full—fledged development takes weeks of work.
Step by step:
1. Formulate a hypothesis and a success metric. For example: "at least X% of N segment users will click on the feature." Determine the threshold at which you consider the demand to be confirmed IN ADVANCE — otherwise, then adjust the output to the data.
2. Select the segments and the entry point. Decide "who" you are checking for and where you will place the "door": in the menu, on the dashboard, with the module card, banner. The entry point should be in a prominent but natural location.
"3. Design the "door" itself. The name of the feature + a short, clear description of the value (one or two sentences - what it gives the user). ""Door" has a status screen "coming soon" and a form where you can leave an interest or contact.
4. Set up analytics BEFORE launch. "Minimum events": impressions, clicks on the "door", click-through/impression conversion, applications left. It must be segmented. If you're driving external traffic— mark up the sources (UTM).
5. Determine the amount and time. Calculate how many impressions you need so that the result is not random, and for how many days you are launching. Too little data = unrepresentative.
6. Start and do not interfere with the experiment. During the test period, do not roll out other major changes in parallel to the same audience — otherwise you will not understand what influenced it.
7. Collect the data and compare it with the threshold. "Look not only at the overall result, but also at the segment section — often the feature "takes off" only from a part of the audience.
8. Make a decision: do / do not / change the positioning or segment.
The pitfalls:
""Be honest with the user: show "soon" and the feedback form behind the "door", do not leave him at a dead end.
— One click is an interest, not a willingness to pay. Separate steps are needed to assess effective demand (for example, a conversation with those who submitted a request).
— Low traffic and the novelty effect distort the picture — keep this in mind.
— Measure the baseline so that there is something to compare it with.
"Tools": your usual product analytics (GA4, Amplitude, Yandex.Metrica, etc.), feature tags for showing the "door" to the right segments, and a simple blank screen will do.
—
P.S. By the way, we will soon be launching one such test ourselves. "If the topic is interesting, please provide reactions, and in the next post I will analyze the real process of preparing our test: hypothesis, metrics, how to assemble the "door" and analytics. And later I'll share the results, what happened with the real data.
