Analysis of one of the leading tech companies in the region
On August 2, 1996, the first issue of the newspaper "Wheels" was published in Kazakhstan, a thin edition with advertisements for the sale of cars, with a circulation of 5,000 copies. The founder is Vali Khusnutdinov. The newspaper "Roof" appeared nearby — about real estate. The usual media business of the post-Soviet space: printing, distribution, advertising.
The turning point began not with technology, but with hiring. In 2011, Vali Khusnutdinov, having met Nikolai Babeshkin at a party on the occasion of the launch of the Chocolife startup (Ramil Mukhoryapov's project), made him an offer to turn the newspaper into an IT company. Babeshkin became the director of Kolesov and remained there for 12 years.
The start turned out to be tough: even before the official appointment, all the developers left the company, and two sites left kolesa.kz and krisha.kz launched in 2006 in parallel with newspapers, they were already in the top in terms of traffic in Kazakhstan and risked falling due to lack of disk space. Babeshkin was literally looking for engineers according to the rating of Kazakhstani portals, which is how Igor Borodikhin joined the team, who later became the technical director and co—owner of the company.
What follows is a sequence of decisions that look obvious in hindsight, but weren't at the time.:
- 2013 — Kolesa mobile application.kz, one of the first in Kazakhstan. The decision is controversial: the mobile app market in the world was just emerging, many were betting on the desktop. It worked — the ad-free app flew into the top downloads.
- 2015 — closure of printed versions of newspapers. By that time, the web was already competing with paper in terms of money, and online marginality reached 80% versus 15% for print. The decision was condemned on the market ("upstart Nikolai decided to smash the newspapers"), but there was no doubt inside the company.
- 2018 — entering the Uzbek market: launch Avtoelon.uz .
- 2023 — Kaspi.kz buys 39.76% of Kolesa Group from the Baring Vostok structure for $88.5 million, bringing the actual control of the Kaspi/Lomtadze alliance to a controlling stake. In the same year, the company entered the Pre-IPO segment of the Astana Stock Exchange (AIX).
- February 2026 — voluntary delisting of common shares with AIX. Formal preparations for the IPO have been put on hold after three years.
- 2026 — Kolesa.kz turns 30 years old. The monthly audience of the app is 5.8 million people.
One detail is worth mentioning separately: with Market.kz (the group's third project, free broad—based ads), the company, according to Babeshkin himself, was too late - they decided to focus on the site and missed the moment with the application. Not everything in this story is a straight line to the top.
Kolesa Group's product-market fit was felt not through pitches to investors, but through a practical test: people vote with traffic.
The key signal of 2013 is the organic growth of the app without a marketing budget. The second signal that is often overlooked in stories about PMF is the rejection of a source of income for the sake of a product. Newspapers were still making money when the company decided to shut them down — because it became clear where the user's behavior was heading.
Kolesa Group's PMF discipline is formalized through constant user contact: in 2025, 35,000 online surveys and 500 face-to-face meetings with users will be conducted. A specific product grew out of this study — the Auto History report (March 2025), which verifies ownership history based on databases in Kazakhstan and Russia. During the year, sellers added it to 250,000 ads.
A similar example is Krisha.kz : the team noticed that it was difficult for users with children and animals to rent a place, and made an appropriate filter. A small detail, but it is from such details that the feeling of a product that is "used by millions" is built — a quote that is not rhetorical in the company, but literally the KPI on the monitor in the office.
Growth figures: in the first half of 2023, Kolesa's revenue increased by 302% year-on—year, to 27 billion tenge, net profit - by 82%, to 6 billion tenge. Business is debt-free, which is very rare for Kazakhstani tech.
The culture of the Kolesa Group is well documented — the company openly lets journalists into the office, which in itself is a rarity for large businesses in the region.
Stated values: teamwork, development, entrepreneurship, deadlines, honesty, objectivity, courage, responsibility, awareness, engagement. The list is long, but it is concretized by one quote from an employee: "If you have made a mistake, no one will hide it from you." Straightforwardness works both ways — successes are also openly recognized.
Practical mechanisms of culture:
- 50/50 hiring — hard and soft skills are evaluated equally. A technically strong candidate may not be accepted if he does not meet the values.
- Kolesa Academy and Kolesa Upgrade are internal staff development, because in 2011-2015 the market did not perceive Kolesa as an IT company and did not come here to work.
- Low turnover — the average "life cycle" of a developer is more than 3 years, more than half of all employees work for more than 6 years.
- There is a minimum hierarchy — top management sits in the same offices as the rest, there is an anonymous form of questions to the director with a mandatory answer.
- Meetings as a currency — the company awards points for organizing events, mentoring, articles; points are exchanged for merch. Employees participate massively, not because they have to, but because it's built into their status within the team.
The main principle from Babeshkin himself is formulated harshly and without gloss: "I don't want to do this staff." According to him, it was the focus on the quality of the product — and not on the speed of earnings — that determined who eventually stays on the team for years.
This comparison is not from the press, but from a live conversation. When you explain to someone from the outside what Kolesa is, the fastest and most understandable response you hear in response from Kazakhstanis is: "Oh, it's like our local Yandex." Not a quote from an interview, but a popular definition — and it actually contains two specific, quite rational observations, and not just pride in the local hero.
The first is emotional: It's really a matter of pride for a company that has grown out of its own, is actively developing, and clearly has a product culture, rather than just making money from a monopoly position. In a market where most of the recognizable technology brands are foreign, a local player with a real product discipline stands out on its own.
The second is much more pragmatic, and it is this that makes the comparison with Yandex accurate, and not just a compliment. There is a widespread observation in Kazakhstan that Kolesa pays slightly below the market, but this is a deliberate exchange, not a disadvantage. You go there not for the maximum salary, but for a grocery school: you gain a culture of development, product thinking, discipline, and the line "worked at Kolesa" in your resume opens the door further — other employers in the market are purposefully hunting for such candidates precisely because of this background. This is practically a one-on-one mechanic that Yandex has been playing out on the Russian market for decades: not the highest salary at the entrance, but the status of a forge of personnel whose graduates are hunted throughout the market.
A funny addition to this parallel, based on facts rather than feelings: Arkady Volozh himself was born in Guryev, today's Atyrau, in Kazakhstan. This has nothing to do with business logic, but it adds an unexpected symmetry to the comparison.
The company does not declare publicly stated ambitions to "become the next unicorn of Central Asia" — the Kolesa Group's communication style is emphatically restrained, without venture pathos. But you can read ambition in your actions.:
- Regional expansion — Uzbekistan has already been mastered (Avtoelon.uz , since 2018), the logical next step is the neighboring markets of Central Asia with similar demographics and low penetration of digital classifieds.
- Delving into data rather than expanding verticals — the latest product bids (Auto history, AI real estate valuation, anti-fraud) speak to the building moat strategy through quality and trust in data, rather than through the capture of new categories.
- The path to publicity through Kaspi, and not alone — delisting from AIX in February 2026 can be read not as a rejection of the idea of an IPO, but as a change of route: Kaspi.kz it is already a public company (it went through a Pre-IPO on AIX in 2020 and is traded on Nasdaq), and the consolidation of Kolesa under Kaspi may mean that the public status will come through the parent structure, and not through a separate placement.
- Loss of independence of the food culture. Kaspi is consolidating control (39.76% in 2023, rising to a controlling stake followed by the transfer of another 11% of Lomtadze's votes to Kaspi's trust management). The culture of "minimal bureaucracy" and founder control has historically been based on independence from a large holding company — and it is still unclear how this fits in with integration into the Kaspi super ecosystem.
- Uncertainty of public status. Delisting from AIX after three years in the Pre-IPO segment is a signal that can be interpreted both as a strategic pause and as a rejection of the plan. The company has not officially commented.
- Direct competition with OLX.kz . According to Similarweb, OLX is kolesa's main competitor.kz by traffic. Krisha occupies a more secure niche (real estate), but the auto vertical is an open battlefield.
- The cycle auto and real estate markets. Both segments are sensitive to macroeconomics, the tenge exchange rate and mortgage rates — incomes are tied to two cyclical markets at the same time.
- The operational burden on moderation and trust. Up to 65 thousand ads are checked daily, 25 thousand attempts of unfair placements and 1 million suspicious messages were reflected during the year. This is a constant arms race with scammers, which requires continuous investments in ML/AI — stopping investments directly affects trust in the site.
- AI agents as a threat to the traffic model are discussed separately below.
Kolesa Group is no longer new to the use of AI — it is worth emphasizing this before talking about the risks. In 2025, neural networks checked 4 million photos and blocked 72 thousand fake ones on one site alone. Kolesa.kz . The AI reacts to stop words in the internal messenger (250 million messages per year) and warns of suspicious activity. There is an AI real estate valuation tool that compares an object with a database of 1 million ads based on dozens of parameters. In other words, AI here is part of the operational core, not a showcase feature.
The problem on the horizon is different. Global trend in 2026: search traffic is flowing into AI agents and AI Overviews (according to analysts, the volume of classic search may drop by a quarter). Historically, the classifieds model is based on the fact that a person visits a website, flips through ads, and compares them. If the user instead asks the agent to "find me a 2019 Camry up to 8 million tenge in Almaty, without an accident," and the agent goes for structured data directly, bypassing a visit to the site and advertising impressions, the entire monetization model of classifieds (ad promotion, banners, subscriptions like Kolesa Plus) is in question.
Kolesa actually has a strong position to protect here: its own proprietary data (Auto History, a database of 1 million real estate listings, 42,000 reviews) is exactly the asset that AI agents need as a source of truth. A realistic scenario for 2-3 years: the company either becomes an infrastructural data layerIt is used for other people's AI agents (by selling access to verified data through API/partnerships), or it embeds its own AI agent directly into the product so as not to give the user's entry point to external players. Considering that for 30 years in a row the company has managed to change the form of its business in time for a change of channel (newspaper → website → application), it would be imprudent to bet that it would skip the transition to AI agents. But the window for a solution is two years, no more.
Experience using Krisha. My kz is generally positive — I was looking for an apartment in Almaty and basically found exactly what I needed, without too much noise from intermediaries. But one story shows well where the product has a growth area.
One of the apartments I rented was advertised as quiet — the center, next to the Botanical Garden, Timiryazeva Street, sounds perfect on paper. In fact, the house turned out to be old and stood right at the exit to a busy road: constant noise from the street, even a passing trolleybus could be heard. That is, "quiet" in the ad and "quiet" in reality are two different things, and I had no way to verify this in advance, except to trust the landlord's word.
The product idea here, it seems to me, lies on the surface: why not explicitly let the user choose the priority when searching — "location and proximity to transport" instead of "silence", as separate, honestly labeled filter categories. Now it is served by one vague adjective in the text of the announcement, which is not confirmed by anything. And for a service that prides itself on market transparency, this is a fairly obvious gap — especially given that it is technically easy to pull location noise data from open maps and assign it to the ad automatically, without the participation of the landlord.
The second point is a purely practical life hack that I developed for myself during the search: fresh ads on Krisha mostly appear in the mornings, and there is a fairly narrow window — from about 8-9 to 11 o'clock — when it is worth actively monitoring new publications. Whoever reacted faster and wrote to the owner has an advantage: in competitive locations, good options are sorted out in a matter of hours.
I can confirm this directly: Kolesa is a truly transparent company, and these are not just words from corporate articles.
Firstly, they have one of the largest conferences in Kazakhstan dedicated to product culture, development, frameworks, data science and related topics - Kolesa Conf. You can get there at no great cost, and this is a real opportunity to see where the market is heading, ask questions directly to the product managers of Krisha and Kolesa, and get to know industry colleagues whom you would not have met otherwise.
Secondly, I attended a couple of meetings that the company regularly holds on its site. They have excellent rooms inside for just such a format — not a hasty meeting, but a well-thought-out space for events. At these meetings, the team actively shares its own experience and invites external gurus or analyzes successful cases from the market. The atmosphere is exactly what is described in the reports about the office: openness and lack of pathos, no distance between the speakers and the audience.
Personal experience (continued)
Interview for the role of Head of Product
About a month ago, I was interviewed at Kolesa Group for the position of Head of Product. What I remember right away is the quality of the process itself: meaningful, lively communication with the recruiter, without formal questions for the sake of questions. I didn't get to meet Alexander with the CPO of the holding
(Although at one time I approached him after his speech at the Kolesa Conf conference, I had just become CPO - Sergek Tech and asked him to become my mentor. He refused, citing his busy schedule)
The final feedback was honest and specific: the product experience was highly appreciated, but the company decided that more direct expertise was needed specifically in the classification, rather than a strong product background in general. There is nothing much to object here — my superpower is B2C EdTech and B2B SaaS products (Retail, HoReCa and FinTech), and in recent years the focus has generally shifted towards solo product development and consulting. This is quite far from the specifics of the two—way ad market: trust between seller and buyer, moderation, pricing, obsolescence of ads - that is, exactly what this whole text is about.
It's funny that the refusal itself confirms the thesis from the point about culture quite well.: Kolesa really hires for a specific profile, and not just for a strong resume — compliance with the domain is assessed strictly, even if the candidate is generally strong. For me personally, the conclusion is simple and, frankly, quite invigorating: it means that I continue to make my product — at the same time, it's a good reason to put the squeeze on Digital Nomad Residency in Kazakhstan for expansion into the CIS, Southeast Asia, etc. markets.

Avtoelon
