Al-Farabi Scale UP: Central Asian Startups Eye the Saudi Arabian and Middle Eastern Markets

Astana Hub hosted the official launch of the Al-Farabi Scale UP program, an accelerator designed to support startups aiming to enter the Saudi Arabian and broader Middle Eastern markets. The event brought together over 100 participants, including business leaders, members of the tech community, and media representatives, to explore the potential of exporting Kazakhstan's tech products to the region.

The launch event featured key representatives from the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovations, and Aerospace Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Plug and Play Tech Center Saudi Arabia, the World Bank, Astana Hub, Al-Farabi Innovation Hub, Tech Hub AIFC, and QazTech. First Vice-Minister of Digital Development Kanysh Tuleushin emphasized the strategic importance of the Middle Eastern markets for Kazakhstan's tech exports. “Programs like Al-Farabi Scale UP help startups scale effectively and establish themselves in international markets, paving the way for the advancement of technologies and innovations in Kazakhstan,” he stated.

A significant highlight of the event was the signing of a memorandum of cooperation between Al-Farabi Innovation Hub and Plug and Play Tech Center. This agreement aims to create new opportunities for startups from Kazakhstan, Central Asia, and the Caucasus. “Al-Farabi Scale UP is the first acceleration program tailored to help startups from Central Asia and the Caucasus expand into the MENA region. Through our collaboration with Plug and Play, we will bring 15 startups to Saudi Arabia’s capital, where they’ll gain knowledge, connect with investors, and secure their first clients,” explained Aslan Sultanov, founder and CEO of Al-Farabi Innovation Hub.

Among the notable speakers was Abdullah Al-Aqeel, Director of Plug and Play Tech Center Saudi Arabia, who highlighted the Middle East’s unique advantages for tech entrepreneurs, such as tax incentives and programs supporting women in tech. He underscored that now is the ideal time for startups in the region to leverage these opportunities.

The first round of the Al-Farabi Scale UP program was announced in October, attracting applications from 10 countries. The program offers educational sessions, mentorship, and access to partnerships, with its second phase set to take place in Riyadh. This stage will enable startups to engage directly with key players in the Saudi market.

Al-Farabi Scale UP has quickly emerged as a vital platform for fostering innovation and technological progress, opening new doors for startups from Kazakhstan and the Central Asian region.
