First National Artificial Intelligence Olympiad – AI Olymp Concludes in Astana

The final of the first national Artificial Intelligence Olympiad – AI Olymp – for students in grades 9–12 took place at Astana IT University, featuring the top 40 school students from across the country, selected through a rigorous preliminary stage.

The Olympiad was organized by the Kazakhstan Federation of Competitive Programming jointly with DSML.KZ, a community of data science and machine learning specialists, with support from the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovations and Aerospace Industry. The general partner was Astana Hub, Central Asia’s largest tech park, which actively promotes artificial intelligence and develops initiatives advancing technology and innovation in Kazakhstan and beyond.

AI Olymp marked the first large-scale event in Kazakhstan aimed at fostering student interest in artificial intelligence. The Olympiad emerged from strategic cooperation between governmental agencies and the professional expert community.

"AI Olymp represents a significant step toward nurturing a new generation of Kazakhstani talent in artificial intelligence. We clearly see students' growing interest in AI. Our mission is to sustain this interest, provide opportunities, and create an environment where these young individuals can unlock their potential and eventually become leaders in the country's technological transformation," stated Zhaslan Madiyev, Minister of Digital Development, Innovations and Aerospace Industry.

The AI Olymp spanned two days, comprising two competitive rounds lasting five hours each. Participants also attended lectures by AI experts who shared insights and future development plans for artificial intelligence in Kazakhstan.

To encourage and motivate the students, 50% of participants received medals and valuable prizes. This practice aims to bolster youth interest in AI and programming.

Following the final, the top 12 participants will be invited to special training camps, culminating in the formation of Kazakhstan’s national team for the International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI), scheduled to be held in Beijing in August 2025.

"AI Olymp is not a one-time event, but rather the beginning of systematic work with young talents. These participants are future architects of Kazakhstan’s digital economy. They don't ask what AI is; they are already thinking about how to improve it," emphasized Bagdat Mussin, President of the Kazakhstan Federation of Competitive Programming.

The closing ceremony was attended by Minister of Digital Development Zhaslan Madiyev and Federation President Bagdat Mussin. They highlighted the importance of training young AI professionals and expressed confidence that Kazakhstan will be well-represented on the international stage.
