Blockchain in Kazakhstan: how was the first Astana Hub Blockchain Battle

On June 16, Astana Hub hosted the Decentral Asia: Digital Finance & Blockchain Conference event, during which international experts, representatives of technology companies and second-tier banks discussed the development of blockchain startups.


The event was attended by Deputy Chairman of the National Bank Berik Sholpankulov, Vice Minister of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry Asset Turysov, Chairman of the Board of JSC "Center for the Development of Payment and Financial Technologies" Binur Zhalenov, General Director of the International Technopark of IT Startups Astana Hub Magzhan Madiyev and other information technology professionals. The conference discussed issues of blockchain and financial technologies.

"The topic of today's event is quite broad. I think that the conference will provide an opportunity to exchange experiences with the National Bank and discuss important issues. Blockchain is a very fast-growing industry. It opens up new opportunities. Today's event is one of the first steps towards understanding and developing new technologies. We understand "These technologies are very promising. Therefore, it is important for the Ministry and the National Bank to develop this area," said Vice Minister Asset Turysov.

During the event, Binur Zhalelov, Chairman of the Board of JSC Center for the Development of Payment and Financial Technologies, and Magzhan Madiyev, General Director of the Astana Hub International Technopark of IT Startups, signed a memorandum of cooperation. According to Magzhan Madiev, this document contributes to the development of blockchain technology in Kazakhstan.

At the end of the event, 15 promising blockchain startups spoke to the jury. The jury included: First Vice Minister of Digital Development and Aerospace Industry Zhaslan Madiev, Managing Director of Investments of White Hill Capital Almaz Amanzholov, co-founder of the RACE Protocol Foundation Artem Sachko, founder of the Digital Law Center Yermek Rustembekuly and Binance Business Development Director Rauan Sagidulla. The jury members chose the 3 most promising startups, the prize fund amounted to $18,000. Namely:

  • The third place went to the Mentory startup: its Web3 educational platform with built-in Game-Fi and Social-Fi elements.
  • Obscura.kz startup Birds of Prey is in second place. The team's project aims to save endangered birds of prey through NFT Drops in collaboration with Kazakh artists.
  • The main prize went to the startup FocusED now: the guys developed a virtual classroom application with gamification, which simplifies the process of online learning.

The teams received checks for $3,000, $5,000, and $10,000, respectively.
