Defense Tech Hackathon Identifies Top Tech Innovations in Defense Sector

The Defense Tech hackathon recently concluded at Astana Hub, the international tech park in Astana.

Timed to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory, the event attracted scientists, IT specialists, inventors, students, and military personnel—all dedicated to advancing defense technologies and gaining recognition on a national scale.

Participants showcased innovative solutions including the Sarbaz+ portal, an autonomous AI chatbot, a utility services accounting system, intelligent lighting systems, digital twins for facilities, and an AI-powered customer self-service portal.

"This event holds significant importance for the Ministry of Defense. We keep a close eye on emerging trends, explore the developments of innovators and startups, and guide them toward areas where their talents can best be applied. Past hackathon winners are already being tested, with their projects effectively integrated into the Armed Forces," said Deputy Minister of Defense Darkhan Akhmediev.

After reviewing over 30 projects, the jury selected the most comprehensive and relevant developments in defense technology. The team MyArmy.Kz won first place and a prize of 2.5 million tenge. Second place and 1.5 million tenge went to the "Zhangyr" team, creators of an autonomous AI chatbot designed for analyzing internal regulations and legal documents. The third place and a prize of 1 million tenge were awarded to the team Uazir Tech for their development of 2D and 3D digital twins.

"Our seven-member team developed an application simplifying the process of applying for urgent and contract-based military service. Anyone interested can visit our pilot website, register, submit an application, and find relevant information. Users can also use our website and Telegram chatbot to receive answers to their questions directly from military recruitment officers," explained Sultanali Abilmazhin, a 17-year-old representative of the MyArmyKz team.

Participants noted the hackathon served not only as a platform for showcasing ideas but also as an effective venue for networking and collaboration with peers and industry professionals.

The Ministry of Defense hosts such events quarterly, allowing companies to refine and enhance their products based on prior experiences. The next showcase of developer proposals is scheduled to take place in Almaty this summer.
