We are Mango Development, residents of Astana Hub. In addition to custom development, we are developing our own Wa-Pa-Pay product, a digital loyalty program for independent coffee shops. This post contains a bit of history, one study, and our first data.
Technology is older than the Internet. The first loyalty programs appeared in the 1850s: soap manufacturer B. T. Babbitt put coupons in the packaging that could be exchanged for gifts. In 1896, S&H Green Stamps were launched in the USA, and by the 1960s there were three times as many such stamps as postage stamps. The "every seventh coffee as a gift" card is a direct descendant of these brands.
Why Mechanics Works In 2006, Joseph Nunes and Xavier Drez published an experiment with car wash maps in the Journal of Consumer Research. One group received a card with 8 stamps, all empty. The other was a 10—stamp card, where two already stood. Purchases before the reward were needed in both cases in the same way.• 19% of customers reached the award with an empty card, 34% with a "handicap".• The interval between visits was reduced from 14.6 to 12.7 days.This was called the "handicap effect": people are motivated not by the size of the reward, but by a sense of progress that has already begun.
What the paper card lacks is that the card remains in the guest's wallet, and the owner does not see anything that is needed for decisions: how many people actually use the cards, who reached the free cup, at what hours the guests come more often, who stopped coming. It is unclear even the main thing — whether the campaign leads to new visits or distributes coffee to those who would have come anyway.
In our Wa-Pa-Pay case, the guest marks the visit using a QR code, and the data for each visit is sent to the coffee shop's personal account. Current indicators:
• 8 coffee shops use the service
• More than 700 registered guests
• 132 new guests per month
• 1,824 transactions per month
Open questions
We are currently deciding how to develop the product further. We are interested in the opinion of the community.:• How much do coffee shops need such a tool?;
• is it worth going to other cities or adjacent niches — bakeries, barbershops, salons;
• what weaknesses do you see in the model;
• What functions are missing.
We are also open to partnerships with cash register systems, coffee roasters, equipment suppliers, chains and franchises.
Сейчас мы решаем, как развивать продукт дальше. Нам интересно мнение сообщества:• насколько такой инструмент нужен кофейням;
• стоит ли выходить в другие города или в смежные ниши — пекарни, барбершопы, салоны;
• какие слабые места вы видите в модели;
