7 criteria by which IT specialists choose an employer in Kazakhstan

ECOPSI conducted research on the employer's IT brand among Kazakhstani IT specialists.  Experts asked IT specialists about companies in the labor market: how well a particular company is known to them as a place of work, how they assess its attractiveness as an employer and how they see its image. 1,075 Kazakhstani IT specialists participated in the study. On average, these are men aged 25-30 years, middle-backend developers who live in Almaty.

For reference: In Russia, a study of employers' IT brands is conducted annually, since 2020, in Kazakhstan in 2024 it was conducted for the first time.

In 2024, 35 companies out of 154 were included in the ranking of IT brands of employers. This suggests that only a quarter of companies have developed an IT brand, that is, IT specialists are ready to evaluate the company as an employer. Also, the recognition of companies that are included in the employer's rating is 2.5 times higher. IT specialists are more often ready to give estimates about them.

This year, the top 10 among IT brands included not only Russian brands Tinkoff, Yandex, etc., but also Beeline Kazakhstan, EPAM, and the Kolesa Group. And among telecom companies, Beeline has become the most attractive and recognizable brand. By the way, this year the results of the study "X20: the most innovative companies in Kazakhstan" were presented at the Kazakhstan Growth Forum, in which the telecom operator topped the rating.

The criteria related to the "attitude in the company" are in the top of importance for IT specialists. Applicants look at the values and culture of the company, the relationship with the head and note the concern for mental and physical health as an important aspect when choosing an employer. According to the results of the study, It specialists need to make a cool product, work among experts, and implement interesting projects. Surprisingly, in 2024, the salary ranks only 5th after all of the above.

"We see that candidates and employees are increasingly putting values such as human-centricity, environmental friendliness, awareness and meaningfulness in everything in the first place. As one of the largest employers in the country, we are happy to observe such trends, because we have long relied on people and leading positions in such ratings have become a natural continuation of our strategy." 

The study also showed the skeptical attitude of IT specialists regarding quasi-public companies: such an employer is assessed as less attractive and is not recommended as an employer, all other things being equal.

The study showed that for respondents, opportunities to learn the necessary skills in the workplace and interest in career prospects are important, as well as a comfortable flexible schedule to which they have become accustomed during the pandemic and the opportunity to work remotely.
