Kazakhstan Tech Solution Day: Leading Experts Discuss the Future of Technology and Digital Transformation

Kazakhstan Tech Solution Day, held on September 5, 2024, as part of the UNESCAP conference, featured over 15 panel sessions, gathering top digital technology experts to explore the challenges and opportunities of global digital transformation.

Key topics discussed included artificial intelligence, digital inequality, smart cities, cybersecurity, women's involvement in IT, digital inclusion, human capital development, sustainable tech, space exploration, digital healthcare, and ensuring accessible internet for all.

Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan Olzhas Bektenov opened the conference by emphasizing the critical role of international cooperation in developing digital infrastructure. "The Digital Silk Road project, which will lay fiber-optic communication lines along the Caspian Sea to connect with Persian Gulf countries, will strengthen Kazakhstan's digital ecosystem, attract global tech companies, and support the international expansion of Kazakhstan's tech solutions. Astana Hub plays a key role in this, providing a favorable investment environment for 1,400 residents, including 400 foreign companies” – said Olzhas Bektenov.

Among the event's headliners were Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of the ESCAP Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, founder of AI4Diversity Steve Noori, founder and CEO of Women in Tech Global Ayumi Moore Aoki, co-founder of 01 Edu Nicolas Sadirac, CEO of inDrive Arsen Tomsky, and CEO of Freedom Holding Corp. Timur Turlov.

The issue of gender equality in technology and women's leadership in IT was also discussed during Kazakhstan Tech Solution Day. "There are still not enough women in leadership positions, although it is becoming increasingly clear that gender-diverse teams perform better and that female leadership brings significant achievements. If companies are successful, why not attract more women? For example, in Europe, a law has been passed requiring that 30% of board members be women by 2025. This highlights the need to invest in female leadership and mentorship. We are here to innovate, provide a new perspective, and contribute to overall business prosperity," said Ayumi Moore Aoki, founder and CEO of Women in Tech Global.

As part of the discussions, the Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Sayasat Nurbek, who moderated the panel session “Human Capital in the Digital Age: Key Challenges and Management Strategies,” presented a number of initiatives. These included creating a unified data warehouse for AI development, establishing a government platform for research and innovation, and expanding technological infrastructure with supercomputers, 5G networks, and satellite communications. Minister also announced a pilot AI educational project in partnership with Google, involving 14 Kazakh universities, and emphasized the role of Astana Hub as a Central Asian hub for IT innovations. He called for broader collaboration with Turkic-speaking nations and international partners in AI development.

From September 3 to 5, 2024, Kazakhstan's capital hosted the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Digital Inclusion and Transformation, attended by over 400 delegates from 30 countries. Organized by UNESCAP and Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Digital Development, the conference served as a key platform for discussing digitalization, inclusion, and sustainable development.
